Drekavac

The Drekavac is a mythical creature from Slavic folklore, especially common in the Balkans, including Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, and Montenegro. Its name means “screamer,” reflecting the terrifying cries for which it is known. According to legend, the Drekavac is often believed to be the restless spirit of an unbaptized child, wandering the earth unable to find peace. It is usually said to appear at night in isolated places such as forests, graveyards, mountains, or abandoned paths.

Descriptions of the creature vary across regions. Some stories describe it as a thin, childlike figure with pale skin and glowing eyes, while others portray it as a strange, animal-like monster with unnatural movements. The Drekavac’s chilling screams were believed to warn of death, illness, or misfortune, causing fear among villagers who avoided going out after dark.

Although frightening, the Drekavac also reflects traditional beliefs about death, spirits, and the unknown. Today, it remains one of the best-known creatures in Balkan folklore and continues to appear in stories, films, and popular culture.
